I live in Utah, a hub of survival prepperism. All Mormons are supposed to be fully prepared for three months -- a year if possible. That edict includes all food and supplies that may be needed in an emergency. Houses are built with extensive storage areas to support preparedness. There are at least three bunkers in my neighborhood that I know of.
So why are Utahns panic buying supplies right now? This week we had the highest increase in grocery shopping. The second-place state is behind us by half. The grocery store shelves are bare. Toilet paper is unavailable. My friends tried to order TP online and it was stolen out of the box it shipped in.
I'm not a prepper or a Mormon. I'm not prone to panic. I started my personal quarantine a few days early and have not needed anything. The prepper culture around me seems to have created its own crisis.
